2026 Goldman Environmental Prize winners
The 2026 Goldman Environmental Prize recognized six women environmental leaders from around the world, marking a historic all-women cohort for the award. Their work highlights the global impact of women-led environmental advocacy, from protecting endangered species and Indigenous lands to advancing climate accountability and resisting extractive industries. Proposed OMB Rule on Federal Research Funding
A proposed OMB rule could significantly affect federally funded scientists by changing how grants are reviewed, awarded, managed, and terminated. Key concerns include increased political oversight of discretionary awards, reduced authority of peer review, restrictions on publication and conference costs, and new limits on international collaboration and public communication. GWIS members are encouraged to review the proposed rule and submit a public comment by July 13, 2026.

Sustaining Equity Work Amid DEI Backlash
A new ADVANCE Journal article examines the closure of an NSF ADVANCE office during a broader political backlash against DEI and considers what this means for faculty equity work. Through interviews with faculty fellows involved in bystander intervention training, the study highlights both the limits of institutional change when support is withdrawn and the continuing importance of community, strategy, and collective action in sustaining inclusive academic cultures. 2026 S-STEM Scholars & PI Meeting
The AAAS S-STEM Resource and Evaluation Center will host the 2026 S-STEM Scholars & PI Meeting from October 9–11, 2026, in Washington, DC. This meeting brings together S-STEM scholars, principal investigators, and co-principal investigators from active awards to build community, connect with employers and graduate programs, develop career skills, and share work across STEM fields. Key deadlines include August 1 for Career & Education Fairs exhibitor early bird pricing and September 1 for poster abstract submissions. AAAS
Research Worth Buzzing About
Tiny brains, big problem-solving. A new Science study found that buff-tailed bumblebees could spontaneously move a ball beneath an otherwise unreachable artificial “flower” to access a reward. Because the bees had not been explicitly trained to use the ball this way, researchers suggest the behavior reflects goal-directed problem-solving—not just trial-and-error. The finding adds to growing evidence that bumblebees have surprisingly sophisticated cognitive abilities. S cience

2025 GWIS Fellowship Application Advice Webinar

Applications are now open for the 2026–2027 GWIS National Fellowship Program. Applicants are encouraged to prepare materials early ahead of the January 12, 2026 deadline. To support applicants, GWIS is hosting a Fellowships Application Advice Webinar on Friday, November 21, 2025. The session will feature GWIS Fellowship Committee leaders, Dr. Zoe Hansen (Co-Coordinator) and Dr. Aubrey Jeffries (Program Officer), who will walk attendees through the application process, key evaluation criteria, and common pitfalls to avoid. The webinar will also include insights from previous fellowship awardees, including Dr. Asma Fallah, Tolulope R. The 2026 GWIS National Conference: More details will be available soon

Looking ahead, the 2026 GWIS National Conference is scheduled for June 11–13, 2026, in Rapid City, South Dakota. This annual gathering will bring together scientists, students, and leaders from across STEM for workshops, networking, and community-building sessions in the scenic Black Hills region. Further details will be announced soon.
 
GWIS Opens Nominations for the 2026 Honorary Membership Awards

GWIS is now accepting nominations for the 2026 Honorary Membership Awards, celebrating outstanding women scientists whose achievements exemplify excellence across research, education, and scientific communication. This prestigious recognition includes four award categories: the Bette Barnes Promising Young Scientist Award, the Florence R. Sabin Research Excellence Award, the Jean E. Simmons Science Education Excellence Award, and the Science Communications Award. Members are encouraged to nominate colleagues, mentors, or emerging leaders who have demonstrated exceptional impact in their fields. 50 most important women in science in 2025

The gender gap in STEM is a complex issue with many interrelated causes. Some argue that there are fewer women who are genuinely interested in STEM careers. While there is some truth to this, we can never deny that discrimination and sexism are big hurdles. The case of Emmy Noether, an unsung hero in maths and physics, demonstrates this. Discrimination was so intense during her time that she was blocked from having a teaching position at the University of Göttingen by influential male members of the faculty. Nevertheless, she pushed on even teaching for free during her first years without holding any official position. Her lectures were promoted under David Hilbert’s name and it was made out to be that she would only be “assisting." Despite this being a constant theme in her life, even enduring an unpaid professorship position, she stayed the course and made great contributions to mathematics and mathematical physics

The Woman Nearly Lost In History
In 1856, Eunice Foote made a groundbreaking discovery about the warming effect of carbon dioxide, a revelation that would shape our understanding of climate science. Despite her pivotal role, she was unjustly denied recognition solely because of her gender in a male-dominated scientific world. Eunice's unwavering curiosity and determination led her to uncover truths that laid the foundation for the greenhouse effect, yet her findings were overshadowed, and her name was omitted from the official record. Her story is a powerful reminder of the barriers women faced, and continue to face, in pursuit of knowledge. Today, scientists are working diligently to honor her contributions, shining a light on her invaluable work. Eunice Foote's legacy inspires us to persist in the face of adversity, to challenge inequities, and to ensure that the visionary voices of women are recognized and celebrated in the pursuit of scientific discovery. Read more
