Podcast: A Small Act in the Right Direction can Change the World- Kendi Mwenda
Kendi Mwenda, a serial entrepreneur from Nairobi, Kenya shares her adventurous journey that led her to Co-found and be the Principal Designer at Poiema Interiors Limited. Post completion of bachelors degree in Science, Mathematics and Botany, she started her career as the director of client services at Fanaka Catering and events. Later, she begun her entrepreneurial journey with Tabasamu Gifts right before the pandemic hit.

Saying ‘No’ in Science isn’t Enough
When women refuse requests to do unrewarded tasks, another female colleague often gets asked instead.
Studies show that women, regardless of occupation, take on the bulk of non-promotable tasks. Although this work matters to an organization, it brings no external reward or recognition to the individual who does it. This article in Nature highlights how any organization can implement easy fixes to address this issue.

Opportunity: Dr. Nancy Foster Scholarship Program
The Dr. Nancy Foster Scholarship Program provides support for master’s and doctoral degrees in oceanography, marine biology, and maritime archaeology—these may include but are not limited to ocean and/or coastal: engineering, social science, marine education, marine stewardship, cultural anthropology, and resource management disciplines—and particularly encourages women and members of minority groups to apply.   
Application deadline is December 22, 2022 at 11.59pm EST.

The Unsung Heroes Who Ended a Deadly Plague

In the 1920s, public health was one of the few scientific areas that had begun to seek out educated women. The lifesaving success of infectious disease control in World War I had opened minds to the possibilities for improving public health at home. Much of the work fell to state departments of health, and their laboratories needed staff to bring new diagnostic tests, vaccines, and other tools of disease control into routine use.
