2026 Goldman Environmental Prize winners
The 2026 Goldman Environmental Prize recognized six women environmental leaders from around the world, marking a historic all-women cohort for the award. Their work highlights the global impact of women-led environmental advocacy, from protecting endangered species and Indigenous lands to advancing climate accountability and resisting extractive industries. Proposed OMB Rule on Federal Research Funding
A proposed OMB rule could significantly affect federally funded scientists by changing how grants are reviewed, awarded, managed, and terminated. Key concerns include increased political oversight of discretionary awards, reduced authority of peer review, restrictions on publication and conference costs, and new limits on international collaboration and public communication. GWIS members are encouraged to review the proposed rule and submit a public comment by July 13, 2026.

Sustaining Equity Work Amid DEI Backlash
A new ADVANCE Journal article examines the closure of an NSF ADVANCE office during a broader political backlash against DEI and considers what this means for faculty equity work. Through interviews with faculty fellows involved in bystander intervention training, the study highlights both the limits of institutional change when support is withdrawn and the continuing importance of community, strategy, and collective action in sustaining inclusive academic cultures. 2026 S-STEM Scholars & PI Meeting
The AAAS S-STEM Resource and Evaluation Center will host the 2026 S-STEM Scholars & PI Meeting from October 9–11, 2026, in Washington, DC. This meeting brings together S-STEM scholars, principal investigators, and co-principal investigators from active awards to build community, connect with employers and graduate programs, develop career skills, and share work across STEM fields. Key deadlines include August 1 for Career & Education Fairs exhibitor early bird pricing and September 1 for poster abstract submissions. AAAS
Research Worth Buzzing About
Tiny brains, big problem-solving. A new Science study found that buff-tailed bumblebees could spontaneously move a ball beneath an otherwise unreachable artificial “flower” to access a reward. Because the bees had not been explicitly trained to use the ball this way, researchers suggest the behavior reflects goal-directed problem-solving—not just trial-and-error. The finding adds to growing evidence that bumblebees have surprisingly sophisticated cognitive abilities. S cience
