Dr. Gina Moreno is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Houston-Clear Lake. Originally from Houston, Texas, Gina graduated with a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Iowa in 2015. She was then a postdoctoral fellow in the Postdoctoral and Transition Program for Academic Diversity at New York University in the Department of Psychology. Her research investigates how decision making changes across the lifespan, how stress may modify the relationship between decision making and aging, and the underlying neural mechanisms related to these processes. Gina is currently involved in various diversity initiatives and is dedicated to promoting women in science. Gina has been involved with GWIS for many years at both the local chapter and national level. Previously, Gina served as National Liaison and founding member of the GWIS Iowa City chapter (2014-2015) and Connect Committee Co-Chair (2016-2017). Gina served as National President from 2019-2020.

"Doing science with awe and humility is a powerful act of reciprocity with the more-than-human world." I strive to live by these words from Dr. Robin Wall Kimmerer in my research, my career, and daily life. I earned a dual PhD in Genetics and Molecular Plant Sciences at Michigan State University where I specialized in microscopy, optogenetics, transcriptomics, and biochemistry to study lipid-mediated systemic signaling during abiotic stress response in plants. As a USDA NIFA National Needs Fellow, I worked in Washington, D.C., learning more about the intersection of science, agriculture, and government from congress, non-governmental organizations, and agencies in the USDA. I am now a Postdoctoral Researcher in the MSU-DOE Plant Research Laboratory where I investigate energy organelle dynamics, with an emphasis on peroxisome motility. I primarily use confocal laser scanning microscopy to characterize peroxisome velocity and patterns of motion and to identify the fundamental mechanics of actomyosin-dependent organelle movement. Outside of lab, I love to cook, bake, kayak, bike, make ceramics, and play my flute. I am an active member of the American Society of Plant Biologists. I have a particular interest in science policy at both the federal and local levels, and I am always happy to engage in conversations about how science and policy have a reciprocal responsibility to one another in the promotion of equitable solutions to society's challenges. I currently serve as the National Past President of Graduate Women in Science. I was drawn to GWIS when I first started graduate school and I immediately become invested in the critical work GWIS does to support women, femme-identified folks, and minoritized persons through leadership, connection, and empowerment. If elected as a GWIS Director, I aspire to continuously affirm our commitment to expansively supporting all underserved people in STEM fields by uplifting the researchers who have confronted societal, systemic, and institutional barriers to create beautiful, resilient science. GWIS has existed for over 100 years and has an astounding record of progressing a community of science that welcomes and empowers all people. I look forward to continuing this legacy with bold, consistent leadership in service of a global cohort of scientists that is ever-growing and awe-inspiring. Thank you for your kind consideration in entrusting me with being a small part of the future of this magnificent organization.
