Welcome to GWIS Empower! GWIS Empower seeks to provide career and leadership advice for women in science along with member-generated content. This month’s issue includes the GWIS webinar, a DEI article, scholarship opportunities, and an article on women's history month.
GWIS Lunch & Learn: Networking 
The GWIS Programming Committee is hosting a members-only Lunch & Learn webinar on Wednesday, March 15th! This session will feature Dr. Heinz Plaumann, a professional career advisor and coach. He's also the Founder of QuantumQik Careers. The goal of this talk is to inspire GWIS members to increase their networking skills! The talk will be 30 mins with 15 mins for Q&A. Event: Graduate Women in Science 2023 National Conference
Mark your calendars and get ready for the 2023 Graduate Women in Science National Conference! This year's conference will be in State College, at Penn State University, from June 22- 24 with the theme "Come Together: The Importance of Connection". Dr. Pamela Harris, a leader in the field of Mathematics and scientific mentorship, will also be joining us as our keynote speaker.

Honorary Membership Awards Committee 2022-23

A new HMAC committee has been formed and finalized. Please meet the members of the committee:
Chair: Akanksha Pragya, a Ph.D. student in the Fiber & Polymer Science program at North Carolina State University. 
Members: Jiameng Sun (Linda), pursuing her Ph.D. in the Developmental, Regenerative, and Stem Cell Biology program at Washington University in St. Louis.
Dr. Karthi Sreedevi, presently working as a Postdoctoral Associate at Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at Virginia Tech Carilion in the field of cardiovascular sciences.
US Scientific Leaders Need to Address Structural Racism, Report Urges
Racism and biases in the scientific community create systemic barriers, hindering individuals from marginalized groups from pursuing STEMM careers. U.S. scientific community leaders have the power to change institutional policies and practices which lead to racial inequalities. This Science article discusses twelve strategies to improve diversity and promote an inclusive culture in STEMM organizations.

Professional and Scholarship Opportunities
LogicMonitor Women in STEM Scholarship 2023
LogicMonitor is announcing a scholarship for Women pursuing careers in STEM. In total, three recipients will be awarded a $6000 scholarship for the 2023 school year, starting in the Fall 2023 semester. Application closes March 31, 2023. Visit here for application information.
Local Science Engagement Network Liaisons (AAAS)
The mission of the Local Science Engagement Network (LSEN) is to mobilize scientists andengineers through state-based networks across the U.S. LSEN is seeking liaisons to support scientists at all career stages, and foster visibility in STEM fields in the public. Liaisons will be guided and trained by LSEN staff members. Are you interested in leading an LSEN hub in your area? Then apply by April 14th, 2023. 
2023 Lasker Foundation Essay Contest
The Lasker Essay Contest invites national and international early-career scientists and clinicians to discuss big questions in biomedical research. The Contest aims to build skills in communicating important medical and scientific issues to broad audiences. The essay topic is "Ethical issues are not always easy to identify. Describe an unanticipated ethical issue you have encountered, or you have seen colleagues encounter, during your training and the strategies used to address it." Interested in competing? Submit your essay by March 31st, 2023.
Women’s History Month

March is celebrated as "National Women's History Month". It was established by a Presidential Proclamation to acknowledge women's contributions to the economy, politics, and social development. Since 1910, March 8th is annually observed as "International Women's Day" which began when female (textile) workers went on strike for equal rights. This year's "National Women's History Month" campaign is "Celebrating women who tell our stories". For more information about women's history month, please visit the following web pages:
