Welcome to GWIS Empower! GWIS Empower seeks to provide career and leadership advice for women in science along with member-generated content. This month’s issue includes information on the GWIS national conference, a DEI article, opportunities, and an article on mothers in STEMM.
The 2023 Graduate Women in Science National Conference - Registration is open!
Every year in June, one GWIS chapter is hosting the national conference, bringing together women in STEMM to support each other, present their research and grow professionally. The conference is open to members and non-members from all academic levels (from undergraduate degrees to faculty positions), and the theme is "Come together: The importance of connection". So, please register and join in State College, PA on June 22-24.

Nature Has Modified Advice for Authors Reporting on Race or Ethnicity
The journal "Nature" recently updated its advice to authors who are publishing science that involves race, ethnicity, and other socially constructed characteristics. The following article highlights the new "pieces of advice" and how these changes can help contribute to a more equitable and fair research culture.

Professional and Scholarship Opportunities
"Out to Innovate" Scholarships
The "Out to Innovate" scholarships are awarded to students who support a creative educational community and foster the visibility of LGBTQ+ in the STEM workforce. Scholarships are $5,000 and $2,500 for first and second place, respectively. The deadline to apply is June 3rd. For more information, visit here.
Traub-Dicker Rainbow Scholarship
The Traub Dicker Rainbow Scholarship aims to encourage and support lesbian scholars to pursue a degree in higher education, including graduate school. To be eligible for the $4,000 scholarship, applicants have to identify as lesbian and (plan to) attend a college or university in the U.S. in Fall 2023. Applications are due on June 2nd and can be submitted via this link.
Mothers in STEMM

Motherhood has been identified as an important driver for the underrepresentation and gender imbalance in scientific fields. Nearly 50% of women leave full-time STEMM employment after having children. For one, women are socialized to believe that they have to be the perfect primary caregiver; there are many obstacles to mothers in science, like "the maternal wall" and exclusion.

But we need moms in scientific careers if we want to close the national gender gap in STEMM! Institutions need to adjust their structures and policies based on real-life experiences and needs to better support mothers in STEMM fields. Here are a few biographies of famous female scientists that are mothers too.
