The Women Behind Oppenheimer
Right now, movie theaters are sold out because of the biographical thriller film of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the leader of the "Manhattan Project". What most movie goers probably don't know is that 11% of the workforce that built the first atomic bomb were women. More than 640 female scientists were involved in this war effort, and yet many of their contributions have long been forgotten. The Lost Women in Science Initiative recognizes some of these remarkable women in a short podcast series which you should tune into to learn more about their significant role in the Manhatten Project.
The author of the recently released book "Not Just for the Boys: Why We Need More Women in Science" (2023), Athens Donald, penned this Nature article discussing biases in science and her suggestions for progressing towards equality.
