Welcome to GWIS Empower! GWIS Empower seeks to provide career and leadership advice for women in science along with member-generated content. This issue speaks about Baroness Susan Greenfield, a neuroscientist and writer who questions whether screen time changes our minds. This month's DEI section highlights the persisting gender pay gap, while the GWIS podcasts feature two inspirational female leaders. Finally, we listed two scholarship opportunities with application due dates in January 2024. With that, we wish everyone a happy holiday and successful new year!
The fist woman to give the Royal Institution Christmas Lecture

The Royal Institution Christmas Lectures began in 1825 with the goal to engage and educate young people about science. It took 169 years until the first female scientist, Baroness Susan Greenfield, presented the Christmas Lectures in 1994! Greenfield is a professor of synaptic pharmacology at Oxford aiming to find a cure for Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. More recently, she stirred controversial discussions with her view on how autism and internet use are linked, and how social media changes the workings of our mind. Read this interview with Susan Greenfield to learn more about this extraordinary woman.

The Simple Truth about the gender pay gap
Despite Equal Pay Act of 1963, full-time working women still only make 84% of what men earn and the pay gap tends to be larger for women of color. To close the gender pay gap before the projected year 2088, the American Association of University Women (AAUW) analyze the gender pay gap. This is a critical measure to understand women's immediate and long-term financial (in)security. Visit AAUW's website for more facts and compelling illustrations concerning the gender pay gap.

Scholarship Opportunity
The MPowers Women in STEM scholarship
MPowers CEO Manu Smadja states that “It’s critical [...] to have a meaningful representation of women shaping the science and technology of tomorrow. By helping talented female students study and work in North America, we’re helping close the gender gap in the STEM workforce.” Therefore the company awards three female international/DACA students who are currently enrolled or accepted to study full-time in a STEM degree program at a MPower supported University (see list in call). To apply, students have to write a short essay and submit their application by January 15, 2024.
