 January 2024
Welcome to GWIS Empower! GWIS Empower seeks to provide career and leadership advice for women in science along with member-generated content. This issue brings to you an interview with a world-leading researcher on motivation talking about New Years resolutions. This month's DEI section takes us back to the scientific workplace in 2023, and looks at some highlights from last year. The GWIS podcast will broadcast a new series this year, read about it in this issue. Finally, we listed two scholarship opportunities with application due dates at the end of the month.
New Year’s Resolutions Are Notoriously Slippery,
but Science Can Help You Keep Them

Every January nearly half of American's make New Years resolutions, but most do not stick with them. How can we make sustainable and achievable resolutions not only for the beginning of a new year, but other occasions. Dr. Ayelet Fishbach, one of the world's foremost researchers on the science of motivation, wrote a book that may provide answers to this question. In an interview with American Scientific, she recommends putting "numbers on goals" and having fun while working towards a goal, as it increases our intrinsic motivation to keep going. For more insight into Dr. Fishbachs book and her work, read the full interview.
