 April 2024
Welcome to GWIS Empower! GWIS Empower aims to offer career and leadership advice for women in science, along with member-generated content. In this issue, we highlight some reasons why women face more difficulties with career advancement. Specifically, we include articles discussing the bias from women having high-status contacts and the implicit bias from men failing to remember their female colleagues. Tune in to the newest GWIS podcast episode on how to blend science with business. Improve your scienitific writing with our book club and your leadership skills with STEM-UP. Read about how we can all make conferences more equitable. Scholarship opportunities are available through the bold.org, NATO and BHW.
Study Shows, that for Professional Women, Having High-Status Connections Can Backfire
Assistant professor of organizational behavior, Catherine Shea, summarizes her findings of her 5 studies- 2 in the US and 3 in China- on the effect of high-status contacts had on women's status. This study concluded that the increased amount of high-status contacts led to the women being precieved as more dominant and less admirable by their peers. These finding also pointed out a solution to the back-lash women faced. If the relationship with the high-status contact was formed to benefit the group, they were not preceived negatively. Therefore, organizaitons should promote the development of formal mentoring programs and introduce sensitivity training to prevent this gender bias.

Men psychology researchers can’t seem to remember their women colleagues
Gender bias is not a newly coined term, but freshly minted research explores how men's implicit bias can be contributing to the gender gap in science. The new work found that male psychology researchers identify significantly fewer women as experts in their field, than their women colleagues do. The Nature article states "These results can help explain why women are less likely than men to receive citations for their work or to be invited to speak at meetings and apply for jobs—even though more than 70% of Ph.D.s in the field were awarded to women in recent years." The article highlights strategies to combat this including citing researchers that are female or from underrepresented groups by using hashtags like #CiteBlackWomen for example.
