Welcome to GWIS Empower! GWIS Empower aims to offer career and leadership advice for women in science, along with member-generated content. In this issue, we highlight how we can make fieldwork more inclusive, tools available for mental health and how AI can be used to make the workplace more equitable. Breaking the Menstruation Taboo to Make Fieldwork More Inclusive

Almost 50% of the global population menstruates at some stage of life. Yet, this biological process largely contributes to student absenteeism and the bias in which women tend to avoid working in challenging field conditions. Many women don't talk about the challenges of changing period products in inconvenient locations or physical problems that accompany periods, in fear of breaking a social taboo and not being considered equal by their male counterparts. This Nature article highlights six ways strategies to address the stigma around periods and create more inclusive field-based professions for future female scientists.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month
For most of us, our lives are as busy as it can be, with work, relationships, extracurricular activities... Sometimes we have to make hard decisions and accept changes in our lives. And all of it can feel overwhelming! As a guide to "Where to Start", Mental Health America put a toolkit together to better tend to our mental well being. Additionally, they are putting on some informative webinars around different aspects of mental health. .

AI as an accesibility tool?
Artificial Intelligence tools(AI) like ChatGPT, have become the newest fixation within the STEM fields, bringing with it debate regarding ethical usage. This Nature article discusses how AI can aid in accessibility within academia, a topic that has not gained much attention as of yet. The article touches on general background, the pros and cons of AI writing tools, and how it may be beneficial in leveling the playing field for marginalized or disadvantaged individuals.

Scholarship Opportunity
WomenIn Scholarship

Supported by Intel, the WomenIn Scholarship aims to close the gender gap in tech careers. Applicants must identify as woman, be a full time under- or graduate student or early career professional wanting to pursue a career in game development, including programming and engineering. To be awared the $1,000 scholarship, applicants need to submit a two-page personal statement and two letters of support by May 31, 2024. For more information, visit the scholarship website.

AMS Graduate Fellowship in the History of Science

The American Meteorological Society (AMS) is inviting applications for the AMS Graduate Fellowship in the History of Science. The goal of the fellowship is to support dissertation topics in the history of the atmospheric, or related oceanic or hydrologic sciences, and to foster close working relations between historians and scientists. AMS encourages women and minorities to apply by 24 May 2024 for the $20,000 stipend that will support 1 year of dissertation work. For eligibility criteria, visit the link below.
