Welcome to GWIS Empower! GWIS Empower aims to offer career and leadership advice for women in science, complemented by member-generated content. This issue highlights women in sports science, a DEI article on Springer Nature initiatives, and an announcement for the GWIS fellowship application. Additionally, a podcast conversation with Dr. Cruz discussing her work in medical innovations.
Females  in Sports Science - One hurdle at a time
The 2024 Paris Olympics are the first to have equal numbers of female and male athletes since the first Olympics were held in 1896. This raises the questions, what gaps in inclusion of females in sports still remain. Difficult to answer since women have long been considered not "as physically capable" as men. In her book "Better Faster Farther" journalist Maggie Mertens tells the stories of women that have consistently been doing things that men have claimed they can’t do. She argues that gender is far more expansive than a little box to constrain us. Yet, most of what sport scientists know with regard to training, physiology, equipment and clothing is based on research on men. It is clear to scientists like Øyvind Sandbakk (Norway), Juliana Antero (France) and Emily Kraus, leader of the FASTR program at Stanford University that more sports research needs to involve women to better understand the needs of female athletes. A conversation with Dr. Meriem Galval Cruz
With over 15 years of experience, Dr. Cruz has been at the forefront of regulatory strategy and commercialization for the development of small molecules and biologics across a wide range of therapeutic areas. Her expertise include regulatory submissions and the development of applications in the US and Europe, ensuring that crucial medical innovations reach those in need.
Currently at Biogen, Dr. Cruz's impressive career also includes roles as an Associate Director of Regulatory Affairs at Dunn Regulatory Associates and Senior Regulatory Scientist at Cote Orpha, LLC. At the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), she played a pivotal role in bridging the gap between academic research and the pharma/biotech industry.

Listen to the GWIS podcast where Dr. Cruz shares her journey, insights into the regulatory landscape, and her passion for neuroscience. Her story is a testament to resilience and the importance of adapting and forging your own path.

Springer Nature Diversity and Equity Hub: a resource for editors, publishers, and peer-reviewers
One major aspect of research is disseminating knowledge to the public. Publishing houses, like Springer Nature, pride themselves in being at the frontiers of scientific research. Yet, how are they working to make the publishing field inclusive and equitable for all? Springer Nature has formed a "DEI in publishing hub" for editors, reviewers, and authors. This website provides case studies, data, insights and more relevant resources for diversity, equity, and inclusion in publishing. Noteable is an 'Addressing Unconscious Bias' course that is free for anyone to take, as biases have been found to play a substantial role in the revision process of manuscripts, ultimately impacting acceptances that can weigh heavily on researchers' careers and funding.
