Outsmarting Ovarian Cancer
September is ovarian cancer awareness month, a health concern unique to women. One in 87 women develops ovarian cancer, and the prospects of survival have not changed over the past 30+ years. As a biochemist at the University of Notre Dame, Dr. Sharon Stack and her team investigate how ovarian cancer cells behave in the human body and how this cancer type is affected by obesity and aging. For men only? Lack of women winners for million-euro science prize draws protests
The Frontiers Research Foundation (FRF) held a ceremony earlier this year to award three scientists that safeguard the environment through their research. All three awardees were men, as they were last year, despite there being seven female finalists in 2024. Finalists from the Global South AND are women, are hardly represented at all. An additional source of inequality is that the prize winner is a single individual, rather than the collaborative team that often produces the respective research. In 2023, Petra Holden was the first author of the award winning paper, but her male mentor was declared the recipient of the prize. Although he fought to add Dr. Holden on the contract, she says: "This prize is being influenced by systemic privileges that come from a legacy of the past. The organization needs to change that.” Read the full story here.
