Welcome to GWIS Empower! GWIS Empower aims to offer career and leadership advice for women in science, complemented by member-generated content. This issue highlights cancer treatments unique to women, honorary membership award application, a webinar on gaps in women's health, a DEI article on the underrepresentation of women at the Fronteirs Research Foundation, and introduce the 2023-2024 GWIS national fellowship awardees. Additionally, a podcast conversation with Dr. Cruz discussing her work in medical innovations.
Women in Forensics: An international overview

Over the past few years, a variety of true crime TV shows, movies and podcasts have highlighted the importance of forensic science in criminal investigations. This has led to higher societal expectations for the involvement of both scientists and technologies in solving crimes. Due to this "CSI-effect", forensic science has seen an increase in interested students, especially female students! Unlike any other STEM field, forensic science has a majority of female graduates. In the article "Women in forensic science: An international overview", Dr. Anna Barbaro addresses the question why women are dominating forensic science and highlights female role models in the field.

A conversation with Dr. Meriem Galval Cruz
With over 15 years of experience, Dr. Cruz has been at the forefront of regulatory strategy and commercialization for the development of small molecules and biologics across a wide range of therapeutic areas. Her expertise include regulatory submissions and the development of applications in the US and Europe, ensuring that crucial medical innovations reach those in need.
Currently at Biogen, Dr. Cruz's impressive career also includes roles as an Associate Director of Regulatory Affairs at Dunn Regulatory Associates and Senior Regulatory Scientist at Cote Orpha, LLC. At the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), she played a pivotal role in bridging the gap between academic research and the pharma/biotech industry.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion in computational sciences and computational tools like AI
The journal Nature Computational Science published a focus article to discuss the current state of diversity, equity, and inclusion in computational science. This focus touches on topics like equitable access and representation, strategies and challenges faced at the forefront of the field, and how computational tools like AI need to be equitable and just. Scholarships
Learner's Annual Women in STEM Scholarship
Historically, the STEM industry hasn’t always advocated for equal representation, leaving women disadvantaged. Thus, Learner’s Annual Women in STEM Scholarship strives to encourage and support women pursuing a STEM career, recognizing the boundless potential they bring to global innovation. Any female-identifying high school senior, undergraduate, or graduate student who is a U.S. citizen or permanent legal resident pursuing STEM may apply for this scholarship. To earn the $1,000 scholarship, applicants need to write a brief essay explaining why they’ve chosen to pursue STEM and how you hope to make a difference as a woman in the field. Application deadline is November 20, 2024.

Kayla Nicole Monk memorial scholarship
 
In honor of Kayla Monk, who had great ambitions and goals for her future but sadly passed away due to a heart defect, this scholarship aims to support ambitious students achieve their dreams. Any minority female-identifying high school, undergraduate, or graduate student who has at least a 2.5 GPA and community service experience may apply for this scholarship if she is pursuing a STEAM field. To earn the $1,000 scholarship, applicants will write a short essay talking about why they chose their area of study and how this scholarship will help to make a difference. Deadline to apply is November 3, 2024.
