Welcome to GWIS Empower! GWIS Empower aims to offer career and leadership advice for women in science, complemented by member-generated content. This issue highlights the positive impact female farmers have on the agricultural community, how we can be more inclusive in global events by removing season references, and how faculty promotions and tenure decisions are disproportionately negative for underrepresented minority faculty. This issue also includes a scholarship opportunity through Elevate Women.
Women farmers quantitatively linked to better community well-being

While there is a deeper history behind why we celebrate Thanksgiving, it is assumed to be a celebration of a successful harvest. Thus, let's talk about women and agriculture. According to the most recent U.S. Census of Agriculture, the number of women-operated farms in the U.S.A. has risen steadily over the last four decades. However, research on their economic role and impact on agriculture remains scarce. In a recently published paper, Schmidt et al. explored the association between women farmers and community well being. Their results support the growing understanding that women business owners approach their business decisions more holistically, empower entrepreneurship and have a positive effect on their community.

Global inclusivity for event invites: stop using seasons
Inclusive practices can be incorporated in small ways, but make a big difference. When hosting a seminar series or inviting speakers from across the globe, consider using exact dates and avoiding seasonal terminology like "fall". It is also important to make sure to respect holidays celebrated by different cultures when inviting others. Read this Article from Nature which emphasizes these points.

Underrepresented minority faculty in the USA face a double standard in promotion and tenure decisions
This month we also wanted to highlight newly published research on faculty promotions and tenure decisions for underrepresented minorities. In a paper published in Nature Human Behavior, the authors look at five universities and over 1,000 promotion and tenure cases that show minority faculty members receive "7% more negative votes and are 44% less likely to receive a unanimous vote." They found that this is emphasized for women, and that there are double standards when scholarship productivity is considered.
