GWIS Empower provides career and leadership advice for women in science, with member-generated content. This issue introduces new initiatives for a multidisciplinary working group addressing key STEM problems. We discuss how DEI training and programs enhance the academic and STEM environment. Additionally, we feature two scholarships: MPOWER, empowering women globally to achieve educational goals (due Dec 31st), and the Lydia I. Pickup Memorial Scholarship for women pursuing engineering (due Jan 31st).
Multidisciplinary Working Group: Empowering Career Pathways in STEMM

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has created a new initiative to address a key problem in STEMM: the barriers to entering a STEMM career and retaining talent long-term. A group of volunteers formed a multidisciplinary working group to address these problems and empower career pathways in STEMM. The working group has released its first report with 35 recommendations covering short-, mid-, and long-term activities. The goal of the report is to spark conversations among the scientific community on how to facilitate pathways into the STEMM workforce and how to retain the talent that was recruited. Read the full report and initiate these important conversations in your scientific community.

Strengthen the case for DEI
Before a new year begins, let's reflect on the status of DEI in STEMM with an article published in Science. At least 38 states in the US have either introduced, passed or enacted anti-DEI bills by the end of 2024. These bills prohibit public higher education institutions from having DEI offices and staff, and mandatory DEI training. So far, the missions of DEI programs remain intact in academia, until they may not. It is therefore important to remember why DEI efforts in academia are so important: To create a culture of inclusion and respect, and ultimately a culture of excellence.
