GWIS National Conference 2025
GWIS Represents: Empower women in science via the Association of Science Communicators
Registration is now open for Science Talk ‘25, the annual conference of the Association of Science Communicators. At ASC, we believe that science is a human right. Connecting the multifaceted world of science communicators is critical for building a strong and knowledgeable society.
SCIENCE TALK ’25 is taking place as a hybrid conference April 3-4 in person in Raleigh, North Carolina, and with real-time online participation. Conference registration is now open! We are also accepting abstracts for the poster/art session.
The conference theme for 2025 is Science With Society, reflecting our view that science and society are deeply intertwined. Do you share that perspective? Join us! We look forward to seeing you at Science Talk ’25.
2024 GWIS Film Screening Summary CODE - Debugging the Gender Gap
In November 2024, GWIS hosted a virtual film screening of CODE: Debugging the Gender Gap. This is a 2015 documentary that examines the significant underrepresentation of women and minorities in software engineering. Directed by Robin Hauser Reynolds, the film explores the systemic issues contributing to the gender disparity, such as cultural biases, stereotypes, and educational barriers. It delves into the history of women in technology, showcasing figures like Ada Lovelace and Grace Hopper, and highlights contemporary efforts to diversify the tech industry.
We discussed the film as a group with a great mix of GWIS members from a variety of scientific fields, only some of whom have experience in computer science. We had an engaging discussion about gender disparities in different fields, as well as our personal early exposures to the field of computer science. We discussed educational tools and experiences that can encourage underrepresented groups to pursue STEM fields, such as Hello Ruby, LegoLeague, and Girls Who Code.
This film screening was organized by the GWIS Programming Committee and supported by the GWIS Ruth Dickie Special Projects Fund (see history here). We are grateful to Ruth Dickie, a Professor Emeritus at UW-Madison, whose estate donation helped establish the fund in 1993.
Thanks to those of you who joined us and stay tuned for future film screenings!!
