GWIS Empower provides career and leadership advice for women in science, with member-generated content. This issue introduces a neuroscientist who founded a start-up to support women's health, and discusses how recent executive orders may affect DEI efforts in academia. Additionally, we feature two important opportunities: the Lasker Essay Contest (due March 31st) and registration for the Science Talk '25 conference with abstract submissions for poster/art sessions now open.
Emilė Radytė is leading the way in women’s health with Nettle
Emilė Radytė has a Masters and Ph.D. in neuroscience from the Oxford University; she is also the co-founder and CEO of Samphire Neuroscience. Samphire Neuroscience is a start-up focusing on women's health, a scientific area that has been historically understudied. The companies first product, Nettle, aims to treat menstrual pain and PMS symptoms. In this interview, Radytė says "With women now in much more cognitively demanding jobs, how we feel in a day can determine our output. This is one reason why I’m so dedicated to this research, as I think it is an absolute game changer for women in the workforce." Read the entire interview about this inspiring woman.

DEI order grounds NASA program to link undergraduates with mission scientists
Four years ago, NASA started a pilot program pairing undergraduates from underrepresented groups with scientists running NASA missions. The program called Here to Observe (H2O) grew into a full grant program 2 years ago, awarding smaller research universities up to $75,000 a year to spark their students’ interest in science. Participating students were bragging about their opportunity to consult with scientific mentors and be part of NASA missions including the exploration of the surface of Mars. The future of the H2O program - like many other DEI efforts - is unclear given the recent executive orders from the government. Read more about this in the Science article linked below.

Women in Science Spotlight
A conversation with Dr. Felicia Davis
Meet Dr. Felecia Davis in this video from WPSU Penn State’s “Women in Science Profiles” (WiSci Files). Felecia is an Assistant Professor of Architecture at Penn State University who combines art, technology, and science in her work with computational textiles—soft materials that can sense and respond to the world around them. In this video, Felecia talks about computational textiles and more with producer Cheraine Stanford and students from WPSU's viewing area in a live Q&A. This resource is part of the Women in Science Profiles Collection.

GWIS National Conference 2025
GWIS Represents: Empower women in science via the Association of Science Communicators

Registration is now open for Science Talk ‘25, the annual conference of the Association of Science Communicators. At ASC, we believe that science is a human right.

Connecting the multifaceted world of science communicators is critical for building a strong and knowledgeable society.

SCIENCE TALK ’25 is taking place as a hybrid conference April 3-4 in person in Raleigh, North Carolina, and with real-time online participation. Conference registration is now open! We are also accepting abstracts for the poster/art session

The conference theme for 2025 is Science With Society, reflecting our view that science and society are deeply intertwined. Do you share that perspective? Join us! We look forward to seeing you at Science Talk ’25.
