Review of Programming Committee's August 2025 GWIS Book Club: Mischievous Creatures |
The GWIS Programming Committee hosted our 5th annual Book Club, on Catherine McNeur’s Mischievous Creatures: The Forgotten Sisters Who Transformed Early American Science in August. This well-researched narrative introduces readers to Margaretta and Elizabeth Morris, sisters born in the 1790s in the bustling scientific community of Philadelphia. McNeur, a historian, stumbled upon the sisters in historical letters and meticulously reconstructed their lives and scientific contributions—Margaretta to entomology and Elizabeth to botany.
McNeur's research was a challenge, as the sisters' contributions were often ignored, systematically erased, and ultimately forgotten. Despite incomplete and disparate sources, she admirably weaves a compelling tale of life, gender inequality, and science in early 19th-century America.
Read more here on the GWIS website and join us this month for book club!
Those who participated in the book club agreed - delving into the lives and scientific work of these sisters was well worth our time and effort. For more information, view this video with the author and read this review in ‘Science’, and, of course, pick up the book Mischievous creatures: the forgotten sisters who transformed early American science by Catherine McNeur. |

| | The Northeast Oklahoma Chapter had a full and fun fall with plenty of chances to learn, connect, and share science with our community. |
| They also had the opportunity to share their love for science with a different demographic. In October, they volunteered at Innovation Week hosted in Oklahoma City. After carpooling to the OKC Innovation District, their members helped guide local middle school students as they learned about career paths in molecular biology, technology, and engineering. |
| In August, they collaborated with the OSU Biomedical Sciences Graduate Student Association (BSGSA) to host a booth at the Women & Girls in STEM Community Fair put on by the Oklahoma Aquarium. They created an interactive microscopy table for kids where they explored leaves and slides under magnifying glasses and microscopes, discovering the tiny, hidden world that often goes unnoticed. |

| | North East Oklahoma organized a professional development event featuring Ann Jeffers, a research scientist in the Mitra lab at OSU-CHS. The event, named Research Ready, provided practical, hands-on guidance on setting up a lab notebook and organizing digital data. Ann Jeffers' insights were invaluable for both new and experienced graduate students. |
